What is a similar cheese to American, but that is healthier?

I was brought up with Land o' Lakes white American cheese, but I've learned that that is the most unhealthy choice for cheese, so I'm looking for a healthier option. What is a similar cheese in taste and texture to white American cheese? I've heard that mozzarella and cheddar are similar, but I'd like to hear more opinions. Please give details and resources if possible. Thanks :-)
